The Reverend Lynda Smith

  

The Rev. Lynda Smith found her spiritual home in Unitarian Universalism in 1971 along with her husband, Stuart, and their two young children. When the family moved to Detroit, their church became First UU Detroit. After an early retirement in 2000 from a State of Michigan position, Lynda began her ministry studies. She has a Masters of Divinity from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, and a Masters in Counseling Ministry from the Methodist Theological Seminary in Ohio. Before ordination she worked as a Director of Religious Education at First UU and as a chaplain at Children’s Hospital and later at the Wayne County Jail. She served her pastoral ministry internship at the Northwest UU Church of Southfield, MI.  After ordination she served as a Substance Abuse Counselor and Mentor for people in  recovery. Most recently she was the Assistant Minister at First UU.

Reverend Smith has been actively involved in social justice efforts through community ministry, most notably launching a street ministry in Detroit addressing the needs of unemployed, substance-involved, and homeless individuals. In addition, she is an ordained Buddhist Teacher with Still Point Zen Buddhist Temple of Detroit.

Lynda and Stuart, married for 43 years, have two grown children; Martin, whose wife and three children live in Columbus, OH. Jeanette and her husband live in Terre Haute, IN. Stuart has a Ph.D. in Physiology and retired from Children’s Hospital in 2008.
