About the
Institute for Healing Racism:
The Institute for Healing Racism exists to eliminate individual and
institutional racism and to promote oneness of humankind. The Institute
program began at the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce in 1997. Our
first Institute attracted highly visible business leaders that were
moved to action. Chamber members committed to utilizing the program
beginning with the top leadership in their organizations. Currently
more than 1,600 persons have completed a Chamber Institute for Healing
Racism program.
For more information, contact Latricia Trice, Diversity Initiatives &
Programs Coordinator, at 616.771.0332.

THE ARC OF JUSTICE
A Sermon by the Rev. Phyllis L. Hubbell
The First Unitarian Church of Baltimore
|
Our Unitarian Universalist principles call us to affirm and promote
"justice, equity, and compassion in human relations" and "the goal of
world community". Our history as Unitarian Universalists includes
evidence of both great commitment and individual achievement in the
struggle for racial justice. Racism and its effects, including economic
injustice, are embedded in all social institutions as well as in
ourselves and will not be eradicated without deliberate engagement in
analysis and action. Because of the impact of racism on all people, and
the interconnection among oppressions, we realize we need to make an
institutional commitment to end racism. The social, economic, and
ecological health of our planet is imperiled by the deepening divisions
in our world caused by inequitable and unjust distribution of power and
resources. We as Unitarian Universalists are called yet again by our
commitment to faith in action to pursue an anti-racist, multi-cultural
society in the spirit of justice, compassion, and community.
(excerpted from
Toward an Anti-Racist Unitarian Universalist Association, uua.org)
|
"Recognizing the fact that institutional
racism is still embedded in American society ... the Unitarian
Universalist Association shall seek to eliminate racism in all its
institutional structures, policies, practices, and patterns of behavior,
so that it will become a racially equitable institution and can make an
effective contribution toward achieving a similarly equitable society."
The "Racism
Imperative", UUA, 1981.

All Souls Community Church is a church dedicated
to religion, but not to a creed. It is a liberal religious community of
free individuals of all ages walking together in relationship to one
another, to our larger community and to the transcending mystery of the
universe. Our community is based on open communication, democratic
process and a belief in the capacity for goodness in all people. Out
spiritual health and our growth as a church community are intimately
connected with the spiritual growth and development of our children. We
pledge to develop out church community with this always in mind. This
church aims at celebrating and cultivating community, a sense of
inquiry, moral character and insight, religious freedom, and helpfulness
to humanity - that is, it aims at liberating and cultivating the human
spirit. |
